If you’re wondering what to use as a vinyl fence cleaner, Superior Fence & Rail has the answer. In fact, there are three answers about what cleaning method to use, depending on the amount of grime your fence has been exposed to.

The truth is that you can be your own vinyl or plastic fence cleaner. Here’s how.

How To Clean Vinyl Fence And Cleaning Plastic Fence That Is Lightly Soiled

If your vinyl fence has been exposed to outdoor dust from wind-blown debris and is not heavily soiled, the best vinyl fence cleaner can most likely be found in your kitchen.

It’s dish soap!

Grab a pail large enough to hold a gallon of water, and make sure the water is warm. You will need a microfiber cloth or a clean sponge to apply the soapy vinyl fence cleaning solution.

Before applying the soapy solution, using a garden hose with a spray nozzle, rinse away any obvious dirt or dust. Once the fence is wet, submerge your microfiber cloth or sponge into the warm water solution and rub the fence panels until they are free from grime. Lastly, simply take your garden hose again and rinse your fence until all signs of the soap is gone. That’s all there is to it.

How To Clean Vinyl Fences That Are Moderately Soiled

The process here is basically the same as the lightly soiled regimen, with the exception of the soapy warm water mixture.

We recommend a “green” solution using two parts water and one part vinegar, being sure to rinse the fence very well after cleaning to ensure no vinegar residual impacts your landscape.

An alternate solution is using liquid laundry detergent combining one-third cup of the detergent with one gallon of water, which is warm to the touch.

For fences that are moderately soiled, you’ll need a little more of that proverbial “elbow grease,” meaning apply the solution using a sprayer or use a soft but sturdy bristle brush.

Either way, let the solution rest on your fence for ten minutes to loosen the grime in soiled areas, then scrub the fence gently and using fresh water from your garden hose, rinse it completely until all grime and the cleaning solution is gone.

Be sure to not use scrubbing pads that are abrasive, as they can negatively impact the sheen of the fence exterior.

Cleaning Plastic Fences That Are Heavily Soiled

For fences that have not been cleaned in some time, a more rigorous method may be needed.

For the cleaning solution, we recommend using a half cup of chlorine bleach for each gallon of warm water.

Wear plastic gloves or rubber gloves to avoid hand contact with the cleaning solution.

As before, wet the areas to be refreshed first with your garden hose. Next, either sponge on or spray the solution, being sure to target any spots where mildew may be present, and let is sit for 10 minutes. If it’s breezy, be sure not to let the surface dry until you scrub it clean with a soft but sturdy bristle brush. Using your garden hose, rinse it completely until clear of grime and any cleaner residue.

For stubborn algae stains, mold, and encrusted dirt, repeat the process, if needed. If you need to reapply, add a few drops of dish soap to the solution to help it better adhere to the fence surface.
