Fence Resources

Frequently Asked Questions

Pierce County requires a building permit for fences greater than 6 feet in height. Fences 6 feet and under are generally exempt from a building permit but must comply with local zoning setback and placement rules. The City of Tacoma has its own rules that may differ from county requirements. Properties in Tacoma's nine historic districts face additional review through the local Landmarks Preservation Commission. Pierce County and the City of Tacoma have different permit thresholds, and historic district properties add a Landmarks Commission step. Your local Superior Fence & Rail team will sort out which applies to your address.

Tacoma's North Slope Historic District, with 1,285 resources and one of the largest historic districts in Washington State, was listed on the National Register in 2003, featuring Victorian, Craftsman, and Colonial Revival homes built between 1888 and 1930. Fence projects in the North Slope and in Tacoma's Stadium-Seminary Historic District may require design review by the Landmarks Preservation Commission for exterior modifications. The Commission evaluates materials, height, and design compatibility with the historic character of each district. Before selecting fence materials for any property in a Tacoma historic district, confirming requirements with the LPC is the right first step. Our team is familiar with the review process in these neighborhoods.

Tacoma's location on Commencement Bay and Puget Sound brings consistent rainfall, marine humidity, coastal fog, and moderate salt air -- conditions that make moisture resistance the top priority in fence material selection. Western Red Cedar is the dominant fence material in Tacoma for the same reason it leads in Seattle; its natural oils resist rot and insects in Pacific Northwest conditions without chemical treatment. Vinyl and composite materials offer zero-maintenance alternatives. Aluminum with powder-coat finish performs well in Tacoma's marine environment. Pressure-treated wood is also widely used. Our team will help you find the right material for your property and maintenance preferences.

Washington State's Shoreline Management Act governs development near waters of statewide significance, properties within shoreline jurisdiction (generally 200 feet from the ordinary high water mark) may need a Shoreline Substantial Development Permit for fence projects near Puget Sound or Commencement Bay. Tacoma's many stream corridors have Critical Area designations that restrict fencing near riparian buffers. Steep slope critical areas, common in Tacoma's hilly neighborhoods, also require special review for fence projects near canyon edges. Before planning any fence near water or steep slopes in Tacoma, confirming applicable requirements with the city's planning office is essential. Your local Superior Fence & Rail team handles waterfront and critical area projects and will walk you through what's required.

Tacoma's residential communities, including master-planned neighborhoods in neighboring Lakewood, University Place, and Gig Harbor, frequently have HOA guidelines covering fence materials, height, and style. Pacific Northwest HOAs commonly require cedar or composite materials in natural tones, and many prohibit chain link in front-facing areas. Tacoma's mix of urban historic neighborhoods and newer suburban developments means HOA governance varies significantly by location. Reviewing applicable CC&Rs and getting written HOA approval before any fence project is the recommended first step. Your local Superior Fence & Rail team works throughout the greater Tacoma area and can help you navigate both HOA requirements and local permit rules.

Tacoma Fence Company

Clear communication, seasoned fencing professionals, and lasting materials

Most homeowners don’t call a fence company until something forces the issue. Maybe the old cedar boards finally gave out after one too many wet winters. Maybe a new dog changed the math on the backyard overnight. Whatever landed you here, you want someone who’ll show up, do the work right, and not leave a mess behind.

That’s what we do. As a fence company in Tacoma, Superior Fence & Rail brings installation crews who know this market, materials that hold up in Pacific Northwest conditions, and a process that keeps you in the loop from the first call forward.

Fence Company Near Me in Tacoma

Our crews cover the city well. That includes the wide corner lots near Browns Point on the northeast side, the closely packed blocks around the North Slope Historic District, the Proctor District, and properties throughout Hilltop, the Eastside, South End, and the Central neighborhoods. University Place, Lakewood, Fircrest, and Puyallup are all part of our regular service area too. If your property sits anywhere in the South Sound region, we’re not far.

Tacoma Fence Contractor

A crew that’s worked Pierce County for years reads a property differently than one showing up cold. They notice when the grade drops across a back fence line. They know which HOA-managed neighborhoods in Fircrest run strict on fence height and material color. Older lots in the North End have a way of presenting property line questions that need answering before anything gets installed.

Working with a fence contractor in Tacoma who’s navigated that terrain before means fewer surprises mid-project. Permit familiarity, consistent workmanship, and a clear line of communication are part of how we work on every job.

Tacoma Fence Builder

The first visit to your property isn’t about handing you a quote. It’s about understanding the site before we price anything. We walk the fence line, check grade changes, note where utilities are flagged, and ask the kind of questions that actually affect what we build. What’s the fence for? Kids, a dog, privacy from the neighboring lot, security for a commercial property? Something else entirely? Measuring and estimating follow that conversation, and material selection is tied to your specific property rather than a default list. We stock commonly requested materials for this area, which keeps lead times shorter once your install date is on the calendar.

Tacoma Fence Installation

Not every crew shows up ready. We do. Before anyone starts digging, the site plan is confirmed and materials are on location. Our fence installation process leans hard on pre-work: the layout gets walked one more time, utilities are verified as marked, and any questions about the scope get answered before the first post goes in the ground.

When the work wraps up, your yard should look like a fence appeared. Not like a crew worked in it all day. Cleanup is included. If something comes up mid-install that changes the plan, you’ll hear about it directly.

Tacoma Fence Financing

A fence is a real investment, and we know not everyone wants to pay for it all up front. Our fence financing options exist for exactly that situation. There’s a calculator on the financing page that shows you what a monthly payment might look like for your project size. No credit pull required to see the numbers. Actual approval terms vary by program, but looking into it costs you nothing and takes a few minutes.

Tacoma Fencing Options

In HOA communities around University Place and Fircrest, vinyl is the most requested material we install. It doesn’t need staining. It doesn’t warp after a wet season the way wood does, and the color holds without the upkeep. Cedar is a different kind of fence entirely. It fits the older North End properties in a way vinyl doesn’t, and the Pacific Northwest climate actually suits it well. It will need attention over the years, though. Periodic maintenance vinyl simply doesn’t require. For homeowners who want the character of wood at a lower starting cost, pressure-treated pine is worth looking at seriously.

Aluminum and steel work for properties where the fence needs to carry visual weight and last a long time without much upkeep. Trex is a composite option that looks like wood but skips most of the maintenance that comes with it. Chain link is practical for larger lots and commercial use. We also install pool fences, dog fences, custom gates and entry systems, and railing for decks and staircases. Take a look at our available fence styles to see how the options line up with what your property actually needs.

Superior Fence & Rail Wants to Be Your Tacoma Fence Installation Contractor

Most fence projects in Pierce County take a day. Some take two. What makes the difference isn’t always the material or the scope. It’s whether the crew showed up knowing what they were getting into. We spend time on that before your install date. We know the neighborhoods here, we’ve run into the HOA documentation that comes with managed communities throughout the area, and we’re not going to guess at your property when we can just walk it. When you’re ready to move forward, contact our Tacoma team to schedule your free estimate and we’ll take it from there.

Irrigation Considerations

October 24, 2017

Sprinkler system consists of a series of PVC tubes that run underground. PVC is a good material because it’s lightweight and easy to install, but it’s also difficult to locate and prone to damage.  This happens frequently during fence installation because sprinkler lines usually run along the same property line where you want your fence installed.  Unless your fence is installed before your sprinklers – accidental breaks in the pvc lines are unavoidable.  The best thing you can do is be prepared, and have an irrigation repair company on hand.
