Frequently Asked Questions

Many neighborhoods in Charlotte have active HOAs that set rules about the height, style, color, and placement of fences. Most of the time, you need to get permission before you build. It's important to read your HOA's rules and architectural guidelines before choosing a fence design because these rules can be stricter than city code.

Charlotte has a Fence and Wall Certificate process, and most residential fences need to be checked to make sure they are the right height and can be seen from the street, especially in front yards and near corners. In many zoning situations, fences in the back and side yards can be taller than fences in the front yard. However, the exact limits depend on your lot type and local laws, so it's a good idea to check before you build. In many cases, if you are simply replacing an existing fence in the same location and at a similar height new permit may not be required.

Charlotte's soil is heavy in clay and has rolling grades. Stepped or racked fence panels and properly set concrete footings can help keep the fence from shifting and leaning over time. Aluminum and vinyl panels work well on slopes because they can follow the grade more smoothly. Wood, on the other hand, may need more frequent adjustments and upkeep in these situations. Our fence fabrication options allow us to customize panels to your property's specific dimensions, so your fence follows the natural slope of your yard while remaining strong and visually consistent.

Charlotte has rules about visibility triangles that help keep drivers' lines of sight clear. These rules are stricter for corner lots when it comes to fence height and placement near intersections. If your property backs up to greenways, utility easements, or common areas, there may be extra rules about how far back it has to be or how solid fences can be, so it's important to check both city code and HOA rules.

Historic and established neighborhoods in Charlotte often favor classic designs such as picket, ornamental aluminum, or understated privacy fences that complement older architecture and mature trees. The best approach is to match your fence height and transparency to neighborhood norms, then confirm that your chosen style, color, and placement satisfy both city regulations and any applicable HOA or historic design standards.

Irrigation Considerations

Irrigation Considerations

October 24, 2017

Sprinkler system consists of a series of PVC tubes that run underground. PVC is a good material because it’s lightweight and easy to install, but it’s also difficult to locate and prone to damage.  This happens frequently during fence installation because sprinkler lines usually run along the same property line where you want your fence installed.  Unless your fence is installed before your sprinklers – accidental breaks in the pvc lines are unavoidable.  The best thing you can do is be prepared, and have an irrigation repair company on hand.
