Frequently Asked Questions
Baltimore City requires a permit to build a new fence. Front yard fences are capped at 42 inches (3.5 feet) tall, while side and rear yard residential fences can go up to 6 feet. Razor wire is prohibited on residential fences, and all fences must be free of sharp points or jagged edges. Permit applications go through your local building and permits office. Permits run through us on every Baltimore installation. Drop your local Superior Fence & Rail team a line and we'll get the application started.
Baltimore's dense rowhome neighborhoods create a challenge that doesn't come up in most other markets: property lines between attached homes are often unclear without a formal survey, and placing a fence even a few inches over the line can create legal disputes that are expensive to resolve. A property survey is strongly recommended before any fence installation in rowhome areas throughout the city. Fences also can't straddle property lines without a written agreement signed by both neighboring owners. Our team can help you think through placement once you have survey information in hand.
Baltimore's Mid-Atlantic climate brings humid summers, wet falls, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles through winter: conditions that stress fence materials in different ways depending on what you choose. Vinyl handles moisture and temperature swings without warping and needs no painting or sealing. Aluminum with a powder-coat finish holds up well in Baltimore's conditions and is a smart choice near the Inner Harbor where salt air adds corrosion risk over time. Wood fences can perform well in Baltimore, but they need regular sealing and spring inspection for moisture damage. Our team will help you match the right material to your location and goals.
Baltimore has several designated historic districts -- Fells Point, Federal Hill, Bolton Hill, among others -- where exterior modifications require review by the Commission for Historical and Architectural Preservation (CHAP) before work begins. CHAP evaluates fence height, materials, and design for compatibility with each area's historic character. Chain link and certain vinyl styles are not typically approved in these neighborhoods. Before selecting any materials for a project in a historic district, reach out to Baltimore City Planning. Your local Superior Fence & Rail team can help you navigate what styles are likely to be approved.
Yes, Baltimore County and Baltimore City operate entirely separately. Baltimore County requires a permit for fences over 42 inches tall in residential areas. Side and rear yard fences are limited to 6 feet, with the ability to increase up to 10 feet if set back from the property line by 2 feet for every foot over 6. Homeowners whose properties fall in the county rather than the city should submit applications through the Baltimore County Permits, Approvals and Inspections office. If you're not sure which jurisdiction you're in, your local Superior Fence & Rail team can help you confirm before you start.

Baltimore Fencing Requirements:
Baltimore Fence Company
Consistent service you can count on, expert installers, and durable materials
Backyards in Baltimore don’t leave much room for error. A rowhome lot in Canton might be twelve feet wide, while a property out toward Catonsville can run a full acre with grade changes the whole way. Superior Fence & Rail is a fence company in Baltimore that has built on both kinds of lots, and plenty of odd ones in between. Same crews. Same standards. The square footage doesn’t change how we treat the person getting the fence.
Call the office and a person picks up. Ask about post depth or HOA paperwork and you’ll get a straight answer instead of a sales script. The materials we install were chosen with Maryland in mind, humid Augusts included, because a fence that can’t handle this climate won’t be standing in ten years. Homeowners hire us. So do businesses. We’d like a shot at your project too.
Fence Company Near Me in Baltimore
People find us from all over the map. One week we’re squaring up a privacy fence behind a Hampden rowhome, the next we’re setting aluminum around a pool in Mount Washington. Inside the city, our crews have worked Canton, Federal Hill, Roland Park, Homeland. Out in the county it’s a lot of Towson and Catonsville, with steady jobs in Parkville and Dundalk too. Live somewhere in between? There’s probably a fence we built within a mile of your front door.
Baltimore Fence Contractor
A lot can go sideways on a fence project. Permits get missed. Property lines get guessed at. Crews show up late, or not at all. We’re not going to pretend those things never happen in this industry, just not on our jobs.
As an established fence contractor in Baltimore, we’ve learned what this area actually demands. City permits work differently than Baltimore County’s process, and neighborhoods like Roland Park and Guilford have design covenants that dictate what you can put up. Our trained crews have navigated all of it. The clay soil here holds water in spring and freezes hard in January, so we set posts with that in mind, not with a one-size-fits-all spec sheet.
Baltimore Fence Builder
It starts with a conversation in your yard, not a form letter. We walk the property with you, talk through how you actually use the space, then measure and put together a clear estimate with no mystery line items. Once you pick a material and style, we get you on the schedule. Because we keep popular materials in stock locally, you’re usually not waiting on a supplier three states away before your project can start. Then our crew shows up and builds it.
Baltimore Fence Installation
Most homeowners we meet aren’t really asking about post spacing. The questions underneath the questions are simpler. How long will a crew be in my yard, and what kind of shape will the yard be in when they pull away?
Fair concerns. Our approach to fence installation is built around respecting your property and your time. Materials are loaded and confirmed before the crew arrives, so nobody’s running to a supply house at 10 a.m. Many residential projects wrap up in a single day. You’ll know when we’re coming, the crew will protect your landscaping while they work, and they’ll haul off the debris before they go. Your yard should look better than they found it, with a new fence standing in it.
Baltimore Fence Financing
A new fence is a real investment, and paying for the whole thing up front isn’t realistic for every budget. That’s fine. Our fence financing options let you spread the cost over time instead of putting the project off another year. Checking what you qualify for is quick and low-pressure, and our team can walk you through it during your estimate.
Baltimore Fencing Options
Drive through one of the newer HOA communities out in the county and count the vinyl fences. There’s a reason for that. Vinyl never asks to be stained, and the humidity that warps cheaper materials doesn’t seem to bother it much. The older city neighborhoods tell a different story. Cedar looks right against hundred-year-old brick, and it fights off rot better than most woods do in our damp Chesapeake air. Pressure-treated pine runs cheaper if budget is steering the decision, though it’ll want a little more attention from you over the years. Pool owners almost always land on aluminum. It satisfies the safety codes, and you can still see the water through it.
That’s only part of the lineup. We also install steel and chain link for security and commercial properties, Trex composite for homeowners who want privacy without upkeep, plus custom gates, railing, and dog fencing. Browse our fence styles to compare materials side by side, or just tell us what problem you’re solving. Kids, pets, privacy, curb appeal. We’ll point you to the right fit.
Available Fence Types:
- Vinyl Fencing
- Wood Fencing
- Aluminum Fencing

Homeowners Association Fence Considerations
November 03, 2017
Installing a fence requires a special building permit in most cities and countries. Requirements and fees can be very different depending on your location. Typically, a contractor or an owner of the house must present their municipality with a copy of the property survey, along with the specifications and plans for an intended fence. Permit fees generally range between $150 and $400.

Irrigation Considerations
October 24, 2017
Sprinkler system consists of a series of PVC tubes that run underground. PVC is a good material because it’s lightweight and easy to install, but it’s also difficult to locate and prone to damage. This happens frequently during fence installation because sprinkler lines usually run along the same property line where you want your fence installed. Unless your fence is installed before your sprinklers – accidental breaks in the pvc lines are unavoidable. The best thing you can do is be prepared, and have an irrigation repair company on hand.
