Secrets to Cleaning PVC Fences in Treasure Valley
If you’re like me, you have a cleaning bucket or garage shelf with a few tried-and-true cleaning products that can tackle any type of grime or stain in the house. Maintaining that freshly-installed look on your vinyl fence is no different. It’s all about knowing the right technique for the job.
Surface Dirt, Pollen, and Grass
The change of the seasons in Idaho is one of the reasons we love it here, but it also means tree pollen in the spring and some hot and dry summers that get dust airborne. Sometimes it feels like your beautiful vinyl fence is a magnet for pollen and dirt, not to mention grass kicked up by the mower or string trimmer!
Unless you like your fence looking like a modern art canvas, a periodic rinse with a hose or pressure washer will remove surface particulates and bring back the shine. If you’re using a pressure washer, keep the PSI between 1500 and 2400 to avoid potential damage to the fence. Once a season (or, as needed) use some gentle dish soap and water applied with a long handled brush to get in the cracks and loosen any stubborn dirt. And for grass stains that soap and water won’t clean, try some diluted white vinegar wiped on with a clean cloth. Too much vinegar may kill grass or plants under the fence if it’s left there, so it’s always a good idea to be careful with drips, pre-soak the area with water, and rinse it all well afterwards.
Mold, Mildew, and Algae
Everyone with vinyl siding or a PVC fence knows about the creatures that grow on the shady side–black speckles of mold and mildew and the green slime that mysteriously appears in the summer heat. Mold, mildew, and algae can be especially unsightly–and difficult to get rid of.
Cleaning mold, mildew, and algae from a pvc fence doesn’t have to be a nightmare! Just like with stubborn dirt and pollen, some soapy water with a scrub brush might tackle a lot of the problem, but sometimes something more potent is needed. For a homemade solution, spray or wipe on a 1:1 mixture of water and vinegar to the affected areas, let it sit for five minutes, and then wipe clean. The acid in the vinegar will kill the living organisms in the mold, mildew, or algae, allowing it to be wiped clean.
Alternatively, there are many commercial products containing acids, fungicides, or bleach solutions that are specifically for vinyl fences and siding to clean mold, mildew, and algae. Many products can be run in-line with your hose or trained into a powerwasher. A home maintenance store or garden center can recommend products, and again, pre-soaking grass and plantings before application can help them survive a chemical cleaning treatment without discoloration.
Rust Stains
As anyone with an irrigation system and hard water knows, it doesn’t take long for rust stains to spoil a vinyl fence. Cleaning rust stains from PVC fences can be tricky, though!
The main treatment for rust stains is acid. Rust is alkali, so acids help to neutralize the rust and break it down so it can be removed. A simple vinegar and water solution is a good first course of action (and as you can see, a good tool to keep in the toolbox when thinking of cleaning PVC fences!). Spray or wipe on, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then wipe off. For more stubborn spots, lemon juice or a paste made from crushed Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) tablets can help to bring back the original lustre.
